I promised that I would share unreleased excerpts of journal entries that were written during the production of the film. Below you will find two excerpts from Michal (M) and Katinka (K) written in the first few days after arriving in Germany.
M: The culture shock resonates deep. Is it culture or history, or both? Public places trap me in a space where faces are those I have only seen in history books. Blonde hair and blue eyes hold fear that I’ve only experienced in nightmares. Isolated by barriers of language like towers of graffiti brick, crumpled down to my feet, cement me in place, a land with rivers for tears, crying for a country repenting. I am falling back in history
K: There is something in me that feels settled in Berlin. My jigsaw puzzle heart allowing its edges to fall into place. Berlin has hundreds of spider webbed train tracks crossing from East to West, a city that is not afraid of its graffiti walls and the dirt that climbs up its concrete sidewalks. There are more trees here than you would this possible in a city that holds 4 million. Its heart, a giant park called Tiergarten.
This is just snap shot, so stay tuned for more to come in the near future!

I just found this interesting article by Natalie Friedman published in the Connecticut review. It is the first article in a special issue done on trauma.
Here is an excerpt:
“Therefore, I reasoned, if Second Generation children felt marked, set apart, from the rest of the world, so did the Third Generation. We had just as much right to speak about the inherited knowledge we possessed and the ways in which it shaped us. I began gathering people’s stories, asking them to write down what they were thinking, how they felt about being the inheritors of their grandparents’ and parents’ histories. I decided that, if I could collect enough of these reflections, I might actually put together a collection of es-
says for publication. I could make public the knowledge of the Third Generation. I sent out a call for papers over the Internet, and was wholly unprepared for the deluge that followed.” (pg. 125)
If you know of any other resources or articles on the topic, post them as comments here or send them to me to add here.

The Descendants Project asks the question “how is intergenerational healing possible”? Today, we are officially launching The Descendants Project blog. With the film nearly finished, our goal is to inspire participatory engagement with the concept of intergenerational healing that reaches far beyond the scope of our story.
Here is what you can expect:
• Previously unreleased journal entries, photos, and clips of Michal and Katinka during their trip
• Additional reflections from the four filmmakers and subjects, as well as links to interesting films, articles, and other projects related to the topics addressed in the film
• New video posts on The Descendants Project Youtube channel and opportunities for you to participate by adding your responses
• News and updates about the completion of the documentary
• Screenings and other opportunities to meet the subjects and filmmakers
• Updates on the future projects of Katinka and Michal, other subjects in the documentary, and the filmmaking team
• And ways that YOU can engage with the dialogue of intergenerational healing.
We look forward to hearing your thoughts as this blog develops!
Best, Katinka
