Synopsis

Relying on minimal information about their grandparents' lives, Katinka Kraft and Michal Blum set out to reclaim the parts of their family histories that were largely suppressed in their upbringings. From Hoya, Germany, where Katinka's uncle reveals her grandfather's participation in the Nazi party, to Nowy Korczyn, Poland, where Michal visits the ruins of her grandmother's childhood synagogue, the counterpoising experiences are delivered with a raw and unapologetic honesty.

THE DESCENDANTS PROJECT is a powerful glimpse into the world of two young women as they grapple to reconcile their friendship with the knowledge of their ancestral heritage. Traveling to five locations in Germany and Poland, Katinka and Michal conduct personal research and speak to other 3rd and 4th generation "descendants" about how family history impacts and influences the choices they make today.

Against a youthful backdrop, THE DESCENDANTS PROJECT addresses themes of cultural inheritance, national identity, and the significance of knowing one's roots.
